Story from the Child of a Deceased Adoptee
“My experience was like many. My father and grandmother both passed away and I didn’t ask the right questions about my father’s birth (out of respect for both) though I wish I had. Fast forward to the era of DNA and changes in Illinois laws, answers became possible. I began with registering with IARMIE, guided by the wonderful Jane Lewis. My dad’s adoption was very informal, with little to no paper trail. LaKisha with Midwest Adoption Center was pivotal in helping move forward with forms. She answered every last question for me with such patience. Soon I was able to request the appointment of Confidential Intermediary services to assist me moving forward. LaKisha helped me navigate that process as well. I received a CI fairly quickly, Laura, who graciously helped me to file to obtain a copy of the Original Birth Certificate. About a month later, I received the Original Birth Certificate and learned my [birth] grandmother’s name. Using that and Ancestry DNA results, I have met my cousins! Such an amazing journey, aided by caring and helpful people. Eternally grateful!! I am an only child, but I am not alone.”
