Story from the Child of a Deceased Adoptee
“We had always known my father was adopted. The narrative provided by my grandmother was that he was the eighth of eight children and his [birth] father could not provide for him when his [birth] mother died.
My father had a stroke at 46 and died at 63 from cancer. As I approach middle age, I want to know my mortality risk. Both my grandparents and all my relatives on that side are gone, so I had to turn to the Intermediary service for help identifying my father’s birth family.
They were able to provide me with [information from the adoption court file in accordance with Illinois law, including] the names of his birth parents. I am still researching those people, but it gave me a starting point. It appears my grandmother did not tell the whole truth.”
