Story from the Child of a Deceased Adoptee

“My father started his own search for his birth parents in 2000.  He was assigned a CI and had his birth certificate, but was told it was bogus because information in the files from a social worker at that time stated the birth mother did not give the real birth father’s name.

[After my father died, I requested CI service.]  Our CI was wonderful and kept me up to date about any progress being made to find my father’s true birth parents.  She came to a dead end regarding any information on my father’s [birth] father; however, she asked if she could continue to search on my father’s birth mother’s side.  I also connected the CI to my Ancestry account with my DNA.

It was a long process, but in the end our CI was able to find a [birth] first cousin of my father’s on his [birth] mother’s side.  [That birth cousin] was the only remaining relative on his mother’s side.  We were connected and she was able to tell me that the first name listed as his [birth] mother on the birth certificate was incorrect.  Her own mother had done plenty of research into both sides of [their] family, and [she was able to provide the correct name for the birth mother].

[The birth cousin] was able to send me all kinds of family history, [and told me that] everyone including any other cousins were deceased.  I was mighty grateful to [the birth cousin] and my CI for all the information she was willing to share.  We continue to stay in touch.

[The birth mother] has 34 living grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren – all living.  What a legacy!”
